Royalty Policy

Purpose

  • This policy outlines the principles and procedures for calculating, distributing, and managing royalty payments to authors for their published works. It is the payment made to an author for each copy of a work sold by ZEGU Press; depending on their contracts, authors receive varying percentages of the publisher’s profit per book
  • Royalties are essential for any organization to ensure transparency and fairness in compensating authors for their intellectual property.

Scope

This policy applies to all authors whose works are published, sold, or distributed by The Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University Press including print, digital, and audio formats.

Definitions

  • Royalty: A payment made to the author based on sales or usage of their published work.
  • Net Revenue: The total income received from sales after deducting discounts, returns, and applicable taxes.
  • Royalty Statement: A financial report issued to authors detailing earnings over a specific period.
  • Royalty Rates : Royalty rates are defined in the publishing agreement and may vary depending on format, distribution channel, and territory.

Below are the rates which shall be applied by ZEGU Press:

  • Print Books : 10% –15%
  • E-books : 25% – 50%
  • Audiobooks : 25% – 40%
  • Journal Article : 10% – 15%
  • Translations are subject to contract terms.
  • Note: Self-published authors may receive a different royalty structure depending on distribution agreements.

Payment Schedule

Royalties shall be calculated annually and paid within 30 days of the month of September and December.

Minimum Payout Threshold : A minimum royalty balance of USD50 must be met before payment is issued. Balances below this threshold will roll over to the next half of the year.

Royalty Statements

Each payment will be accompanied by a detailed royalty statement showing:

  • Units sold
  • Revenue earned
  • Deductions (returns, discounts, etc.)
  • Total royalties due statements are provided via email or secure author portal.

Taxes and Withholding

  • Authors may be subject to local or international tax laws.
  • ZEGU Press shall withhold taxes as required by law and provide necessary tax documents (e.g., Income tax.)

Dispute Resolution

  • Authors may raise disputes regarding royalty calculations within 60 days of receiving a statement.
  • All concerns will be reviewed and resolved within 5 business days.

Changes to This Policy

  • We reserve the right to modify this policy at any time.
